If your project involves painting or staining over wood, you want to be sure you use the appropriate product so you’re entirely satisfied with the end result.

Stain and paint are your go-to staples for wood projects, but you may wonder which is appropriate. Our team of experts wants you to be informed, so we want to discuss the applications of paint and stain and in what situations one would work better over the other.

The Characteristics of Benjamin Moore Stain

Use Stain if you want the wood grains to shine through in your project. Stain penetrates the wood and acts as a protective coat to preserve the natural grain pattern. It is typically less expensive than paint and usually more straightforward to apply. However, the color options tend to be more limited than paint hues. We carry four different types of stains that are suited for a variety of applications:

Clear Toner is to wood what sunscreen is to your skin. Clear Toner protects from UV rays so that the wood’s grain will not be damaged.
Semi-transparent will change the wood's color just enough not to obscure the grain, and you should apply it every 2 – 3 years.
Semi Solid contains less pigment than a solid stain. It will slightly obscure the grain with its color but will still allow some of the grain to shine through; you should reapply it every 2 – 4 years.
Solid acts more like flat paint because it will entirely obscure the grain. A solid stain may peel if you don’t apply enough coats, but it will last at least 5 – 7 years.

Now that the holidays have ended and you have some free time, you might be thinking about your next DIY project. We have everything you need for a successful job involving wood painting. Whether you are painting an heirloom, a fence, a gate, or a floor, The Painted Horse is eager to share some tips for painting wood like a professional.

1. Prepare the Wood

Properly preparing a wood surface for painting is the most crucial step. Primer and paint will not adhere to a surface you haven’t prepared; it’s as simple as that. First, remove any old paint with sandpaper or paint remover to avoid paint build-up. Next, fill in any holes or dings with putty to ensure a smooth surface. You can easily use spackle or joint compound for this process. Once the paint completely dries, sand the surface and clean it off with a damp cloth. Finally, tape off any parts of the surface you do not want to paint.

2. Prime the Wood

Priming is another important step you want to be sure not to skip. If you don’t prime a surface, the paint will not adhere and may require additional coats of paint to ensure proper coverage. An oil-based primer is probably your best option, as it is far more durable than latex and adheres to wood much better.

As for whether you want to apply the primer with a brush, roller, or sprayer, it depends on your preference. Using a sprayer will accelerate the process, while using a brush and roller will give you thinner coats, making for a smoother surface. Be sure not to stop at one coat. Two coats are playing it safe. Allow for the surface to dry before painting.

3. Paint the Wood

Since wood is so porous, using a high-quality bristle brush will give you the best results. Rollers simply cannot penetrate the surface like a brush can. You can always consider a sprayer as well.
